Off-Road Riding near Sunset RV Park

🚙 Off‑Roading in the Black Hills

From your campsite at Sunset RV Park, you’re only minutes from some of the best off‑roading in the Black Hills. Guests love waking up among the pines and heading out to the nearby OHV trailheads, just a short drive from the park and offering direct access to the Black Hills National Forest’s motorized trail system. From these trailheads, riders can jump onto narrow 62‑inch routes, ridge‑top overlooks, and long stretches of forest roads that wind through granite spires and open meadows. With thousands of miles of designated OHV trails across the region, you can enjoy anything from a relaxed backcountry cruise to a full day of technical riding — all starting just moments from your campsite.

🌲 A Massive Playground of Trails

  • 3,800+ miles of open roads and trails wind through the Black Hills National Forest.

  • 700+ miles are specifically built for OHV use, ranging from smooth two‑tracks to tight single‑track.

  • 21 motorized trailheads make it easy to unload, park, and ride.

  • Trails include single‑track, 62-inch narrow routes, and full‑access paths for larger machines.

  • Most routes are open May 15–December 15, depending on weather.

🪪 Permits & Access

To ride the South Dakota motorized trail system, visitors need a Black Hills Motorized Trail Permit. Licensed OHVs can operate on most state roads, but interstate riding is always prohibited. Non‑residents can purchase temporary permits for on‑road use if their home state doesn’t issue street‑legal plates.
