FAQs at Sunset RV Park

12246 Sunset Ln, Custer, SD 57730

“What time is check‑in and check‑out?”

Check in is 2PM, and check-out is 11AM. If you need early check-in or late check-out, ask us, and we might be able to accommodate.

“Do you have quiet hours?”

Since our park is adults‑oriented and peaceful, most hours are actually quiet.

“How good is the Wi‑Fi?”

Our Wi‑Fi is fast enough for streaming, remote work, and all the usual online fun. We can get a great signal to your rig, but once it hits the outside, your RV turns into a shiny metal Wi‑Fi bunker. Here are a few easy tricks to help the signal sneak inside:

• Sit by a window — Metal blocks Wi‑Fi, glass lets it slip through.
• Crack a window or door — Even a tiny opening gives the signal a doorway.
• Turn off your RV’s built‑in Wi‑Fi booster — It sounds helpful, but it often picks a fight with networks.
• Avoid hiding your device behind big metal appliances — Fridges and microwaves are Wi‑Fi’s sworn enemies.

If all else fails, step outside for a moment—our signal loves the great outdoors.

“How is cell reception in the area?”

Custer can be spotty depending on the carrier. We have Verizon and have good reception. We've heard the same about AT&T and T-Mobile.

"What about television reception?"

From the experience of some of our guests, Custer only receives PBS channels from broadcast antennas that are over the hills and 27 miles away in Rapid City. If television coverage is important to you, it is best to either have your own satellite dish or to stream online. Roku devices and Amazon Fire TV devices work well. We have fast, reliable internet here at Sunset RV Park, so we’ve included links to popular streaming services you may already subscribe to or want to explore:

“Can we have a campfire?”

We have a community fire pit, and you can have a propane fire pit at your site. No ground-contact wood fires outside of the community fire pit. Local, state, and/or federal restrictions may prohibit campfires due to weather conditions.

“Are pets allowed?”

We are very pet friendly! Pets must be on leash at all times, cannot disturb other guests or display aggressive behavior, and guests must immediately pick up after their pet and dispose of waste properly. The Mickelson Trail is within walking distance and is a great trail for walking your pets! There is also a fenced dog park in downtown Custer.

“Can I run my generator?”

There's no need! You'll have full hookups.

“Do you have laundry or shower facilities?”

No, but Custer Laundry is 2 miles away and a very nice laundromat with friendly owners, and showers are available at the YMCA in downtown Custer.

“How’s the water pressure? Is the water safe to drink?”

The water pressure is good, and the water comes from a well and is safe to drink. Some of our guests have remarked about how good our water is!

“Is the road to the park suitable for big rigs?”

Sunset Lane is wide and well-maintained. We've had some very long rigs here!

“How many sites do you have?”

With only 9 sites at Sunset RV Park, you're staying somewhere small and peaceful.

“Can friends visit me at my site?”

Yes, they can. Please let us know ahead of time so we can plan for parking and recognize any unfamiliar vehicles on the property.

“Where do I take my trash?”

We have a dumpster on site, centrally located for your use. We do not collect recycling, but it can be taken to Rapid City if you'll be going that direction.

“Can I bring my own firewood?”

Traveling with firewood can potentially transport invasive species. To be safe, you should purchase firewood here in Custer.

“Will we see wildlife at the park?”

You might see deer, rabbits, and wild birds. I've seen turkey prints in the snow, but they're rarely seen here. Black bears can be found but they're rare, and haven't been seen in the RV park. You might hear coyotes yodeling late at night.

“What’s the weather like in the Black Hills?”

The weather can change drastically in the Black Hills. Always be prepared for crisp mornings, cool nights, and sudden storms.

"Is it normal for the weather to change so quickly?"

It does change quickly! Chinook Days is a community winter festival in Spearfish, SD, celebrating the world record temperature shift on January 22, 1943, when a Chinook wind raised the temperature by 49°F — from -4°F to 45°F — in just two minutes.

“What happens if it freezes at night?”

This can happen any time of the year - truthfully! We will let you know when we will have to turn off the water for the night, and you'll need to disconnect your hose from the hydrant to prevent damage.

“What are the best things to do within a few miles?”

There's so many things to do in downtown Custer. And the Mickelson Trail is within walking distance. Custer State Park is 10 minutes away including some iconic scenic drives. Check out our Attractions page for more.

“Can I bike or hike directly from the park?”

Absolutely! A lot of our guests love this about our RV Park! We have great access to the Mickelson Trail without being directly on the trail or on the highway. We can highly recommend the Mickelson Trail, and all 109 miles are amazing to see!

"Can I have a package delivered to me while I'm a guest?"

Of course! When you order your item, have it addressed to your name, C/O Sunset RV Park, 12246 Sunset Ln, Custer, SD 57730. When it arrives, we will deliver it to you or to your RV if you're away. If you require other handling, call us and let us know prior to the arrival date of the package.

“When are you open for the season?”

We are open year-round, so inquire about special winter rates. Being open year-round requires special maintenance to keep the driveway and sites open for access. If you're looking for an early season, late season, or winter stay, call and discuss with us so that we can work to accommodate.

"Are those black helicopters looking for someone? Should I be afraid?"

What did you do???

If you didn't do anything, you shouldn't be afraid. That’s most likely a Blackhawk helicopter from Ellsworth Air Force Base doing training at the nearby airport. The training happens about once a week and usually lasts only a few minutes. Actually, enjoy the entertainment! Come outside and wave!

"What are those fences keeping in or keeping out?"

Sasquatch.
